Advice? Understand your motivations for joining local government. The sector is rewarding but challenging, and therefore you really need to be committed to the public sector. This will be tested throughout the application stages. And don't be afraid to bring new ideas! Showing creativity and innovation can help you stand out from the crowd.

How have you changed? Being involved in consultation with residents has allowed me to understand the situation people are in, their concerns, and the human impact of the work I am doing. The most rewarding part of the NGDP is being able to see the changes you are making. There is so much happening in Haringey, with major regeneration projects across the borough. But it is not just the physical changes, with GCSE results improving, employment opportunities increasing and more housing being developed – the impact on residents' quality of life is the most exciting thing!

Favourite projects? My first placement was in Carbon Management. From day one, I was given lots of responsibility, leading my own projects and engaging with services across the Council. Writing the Annual Carbon Report gave me exposure to Councillors, which increased my understanding of local democracy and decision making. I am currently working in Housing Demand, where the impact of the London housing crisis is very apparent. I am working on developing a support package for residents in temporary accommodation, and supporting the implementation of a plan to reduce the number of households in this type of accommodation, shifting to a preventative model.

What about your development? The NGDP has helped me to develop numerous skills which will be useful as I move into the next stage of my career. In Haringey, the scheme is well respected, and graduates have access to high level work and senior support. Placements are overseen by a panel of Assistant Directors, ensuring personal development is prioritised. Graduates also have regular meetings with the Chief Executive, which provides valuable mentoring and an insight into strategic issues.
