The LGA Conservative Group is the national voice for Conservative Local Government. We are here to support both Conservative council groups and Conservative councillors. Conservatives are leading the way in local government, embracing the new localist agenda, protecting frontline services and offering value for money.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe OBE, Leader of the LGA Conservative Group, responds to the announcement of an additional £1.6 billion in Government funding for councils
“Local government has been at the forefront of the unprecedented national effort against Coronavirus, and councils across the country will strongly welcome the announcement of an additional £1.6 billion to help them deal with the ongoing impact of the disease.
“Councils have rightly focused their efforts on supporting those in their communities who most need their assistance, and this funding will allow them to continue their vital work of getting rough sleepers off the streets, supporting shielding programmes, looking after vulnerable children and adults, supporting care workers and maintaining core services.
“I wish to thank both Robert Jenrick and his colleagues at the Treasury for listening to our concerns about the financial impact that Coronavirus has had on local government and responding in such a positive and timely manner.
“Today’s announcement means that local government has received over £3.2 billion to deal with the Coronavirus crisis, and follows the welcome news earlier in the week that councils will be able to defer £2.6 billion in business rates payments to central government.
“The Secretary of State has today written to councils to thank them for their response to the pandemic and to specifically acknowledge our workers as the ‘unsung heroes’ of the crisis.
“It is fitting that the contribution of council workers is officially recognised alongside their colleagues in the NHS and other professions, and they will continue to play a vital role in supporting the most vulnerable members of our society in the coming weeks and months.”
