Re-thinking local

Councils have been true leaders during the coronavirus pandemic, showing what is possible when leadership is rooted in local communities. But a response to a crisis cannot be the limit of our ambitions. We must now take the lead in rebuilding our communities. With the right tools and resources councils can deliver on the ambitions we have for the diverse communities we represent.

#ReturnToWork

Supporting councils with recruitment and helping professionals return to work.
Four national programmes will run a recruitment drive on behalf of councils and support them to fill their vacancies with experienced and committed individuals. Candidates carefully selected for the programme will be professionals who are currently on a career break and are looking to get back into work. They will be provided with free training, placements and/or networking opportunities with councils to support their return to work.

#CouncilsCan

Our campaign to influence the upcoming Spending Review.
With the right funding and powers, councils can continue to lead their local areas, improve residents’ lives, reduce demand for public services and save money for the taxpayer.

Housing, planning and homelessness

Local government shares the collective national ambition to tackle their local housing crisis, which will only be achieved with strong national and local leadership working together. As house builders, housing enablers, and landlords; as planners, place-shapers, and agents of growth, transport and infrastructure; as responsible guardians to the vulnerable and the homeless; and as democratically accountable to communities – local government is at the heart of the housing solution.

The lives we want to lead

The LGA green paper for adult social care and wellbeing
Years of significant underfunding of councils, coupled with rising demand and costs for care and support, have combined to push adult social care services to breaking point. The Government’s decision to delay its long-awaited green paper on the issue has prompted local government to take action and publish its own green paper and public consultation.

In 2018, we published a series of think pieces in which sector experts addressed issues at the heart of the debate to help define what a system fit for future generations might look like. Read the full collection

Work Local

Our positive vision for an integrated and devolved employment and skills service
Our proposal brings together advice and guidance, employment, skills, apprenticeship and business support around place, providing a more coherent offer for the unemployed and low skilled of all ages, while supporting local economic growth by forging better links between training providers and employers.

Bright Futures

Our call to properly fund the services that change children’s lives
Helping children and young people to fulfil their potential is a key ambition of all councils, but services that can support them to do so are under increasing pressure. We are calling on Government to properly fund the services that support children to the bright futures they deserve.

#OurDay

A 24hr social media celebration of the unsung heroes of local government
#OurDay is a yearly social media campaign to reveal a day in the life of local government and how councils deliver 800+ services on a day-to-day basis.

DevoNext

Our call to devolve powers to local areas
Devolution to local areas can bring economic, political and social benefits to communities across the country. Our online resource details what powers councils have already been given and what they're doing with them, as well as tools to help your council negotiate further devolution.

Be a councillor

Finding new councillors
Increasing the pool of talent from which councillors are elected is a key task for local government. We need different kinds of people willing to stand for election so that parties get a choice of quality candidates.
